Sacramento County deputies are working a shooting that occurred on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area as deputies were clearing a large unsanctioned party of a crowd of several hundred.
Before the Gunfire
Deputies first arrived at the park around 6:30 Saturday evening after being notified of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Shortly after, another report was received regarding an alleged brawl unfolding near the park.
An overhead unit scanned the area from the air but reported no active disturbance. Despite this, it was evident that an enormous crowd had gathered without authorization without permission.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies started clearing the unauthorized gathering by forming a perimeter and announcing over their public address systems telling the crowd to clear out. Approximately 15 minutes were provided for attendees to disperse.
At the height of the dispersal effort that an estimated 20 to 25 shots rang out. The barrage of gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Officers immediately began searching for victims.
Four People Shot
Ultimately, four shooting victims were found to have been shot. The victims — comprising three men and one woman ranging in age through their in their mid to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to area medical facilities. Medical personnel confirmed that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one person's injuries were considered minor. According to authorities, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento fire crews provided support and helped triage shooting victims at the park.
Evidence at the Scene
The bulk of the shooting seemed to have happened along Cottage Way near the Home Depot store on the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Law enforcement investigators found additional shell casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Round impacts were noted in the iron fence adjacent to the Home Depot. The physical evidence confirmed that at least one shooter had been aiming south from Cottage Way toward the Home Depot store. The nearby Home Depot was placed on lockdown during the incident. CSI investigators and detectives kept processing evidence late into the evening.
Suspects Detained
Details gathered over check here police scanner frequencies showed that a Kia vehicle had been detained in Solano County. Four suspects were detained. Deputies were sent to retrieve the detainees to transport the detainees for formal questioning. Video reviewed at the scene made clear that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
